One of the leading ladies of The Outcasts finally breaks the ice in her first interview since the series’ official reboot! VSGuide sits down with Missy Peregrym, the woman behind that red, webbed mask! Producers have leaked very few spoilers for the new series, but the actress has come equipped with a few snippets on what’s in store for Melanie Haelstrom!
VSGUIDE: It’s been said before that Melanie would be a little different this time around. Can you elaborate on that a bit more? What can we expect?

PEREGRYM: The new series starts a little earlier in her life. She’s a little younger, a little more inexperienced but what’s really changed is that she’s really got that teenage attitude going on. Like, that attitude you usually see with girls her age, especially when they go through what she’s going through or what she’s been through, you know? Being Melanie’s not easy, and that shows a little more.

VSGUIDE: How does starting earlier in her life affect her, and the show in general?

PEREGRYM: She’s new, almost fresh out of the box, basically, and it’s a really bad time for her. The series literally starts exactly one year after her grandpa dies, and everyone who knows the Spider-Man mythos knows what that means. So she hasn’t been at this whole “saving the city” thing very long, she’s growing and learning with the X-Men and they're all going to make a lot of mistakes. What rookie doesn’t, you know?

VSGUIDE: Speaking of the X-Men, how will her relationship with them be this time around? Are there any she’s drawn to more than the others?

PEREGRYM: She’s going to be much closer to them this time around. Besides Gwen and MJ, they’re all she’s got, really. And she does happen to form a little favored trio with two specific X-Men, actually. You can definitely count on seeing a lot of Spidey, Cyclops and Marvel Girl working together.

VSGUIDE: Now that you mention a “trio”, what’s Melanie’s “civilian” life going to look like? Say, in terms of Mary-Jane and Gwen? What about her grandmother?

PEREGRYM: I knew that was coming [laughs]. Melanie has her hands full with all this stuff going on from the second the series starts but Gwen, MJ and her grandmother are definitely her rocks. Melanie and her grandma have their rough patches, but they’re still really close, and they’re there for each other especially since her grandfather’s death was such a short time ago. Gwen and MJ are part of the popular crowd, and they hang out a lot and somehow—well, actually thanks to Mary-Jane [laughs]—Melanie is a part of that duo. Trio? Whatever you want to call it. But it’s a little messy, I think, because she doesn't always feel like she fits in with them.

VSGUIDE: Before we wrap this up, can you give us any hints at what’s in store once the series starts? Is there a “big bad”?

PEREGRYM: It’s basically a problem that starts off small and snowballs. It pulls a lot of people in, destroys others, and it just gets worse and worse. It’s not going to be pretty. Like, at all.
